A Passive Sampler for Atmospheric Particles

Preliminary investigation on the feasibility of size selective passive sampling for atmospheric particles was undertaken through laboratory simulated and outdoor sampling. The passive samplers used in the research were improved from passive sampler used for sampling atmospheric organic contaminants. Sampled particle size distribution was analyzed by MasterSizer 2000 laser particle size analyzer. Results indicate: particles collected from laboratory simulated sampling were in accord with lognormal distribution while those from outdoor sampling deviated from that distribution due to weather or other unexpected reasons. Particles from both laboratory simulated and outdoor sampling indicated that to certain degree, passive samplers wrapped with filter mesh of different aperture can selectively sample particles of different size. The smaller aperture of the filter mesh, the smaller of the overall particle size. Moreover, the thesis also gives some suggestions for further research based on the problem came across in the research, e.g. the problem concerning the suspended particle collection in the simulation box.
